Summer is upon us, and the kids are out of school and free to while away the hours in the season’s sunshine. However, not all parents have the luxury of time off to keep the little ones company, and those that do often have a plethora of other obligations to fulfill. Whether you’re hitting your Pixabay, heading out for a rural adventure or just spending the summer months in your own backyard, having a few extra tools to keep the kids happy is essential.

Apps have provided parents with a wonderful resource. They’re educational, enjoyable and relatively mess free. However, there is a word of warning when allowing children to use internet-capable devices. If you haven’t already, I recommend installing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to keep them safe and secure while they play. Secure Thoughts is a leading VPN review site if you want more information.

Roadside America

If you’re traveling, particularly by road, this app is a wonderful way to keep the little ones quiet in the back of the car. It uses GPS and maps to pinpoint roadside attractions, from the incredibly interesting to the downright weird and wonderful. Kids can entertain themselves by keeping their eyes peeled for the next potential stop or simply by reading the reviews of each destination.

On initial download, you can only select one region, ideally the one closest to home. However, the rest of the country can be purchased via the in-app add-ons. You can also use the app to plan routes if you feel like taking a dedicated road trip around the attractions.

Math is a pretty divisive topic for kids: they either love it or they hate it. So having a fun app that makes the subject accessible and enjoyable while still providing an educational element is truly a godsend. With three difficulty levels and activities around all the basic mathematical concepts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, it’s a comprehensive learning experience.

The app uses timed sessions to practice equations and fun graphics to denote success and lives remaining. You can even keep a track of your results so you can see your progress. It’s a wonderfully simple format but has received great reviews and provides hours of fun!

These include early humans; ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; Medieval Europe; the Industrial Revolution and both World Wars, among many others.

It covers nearly every element in detail, including the skeleton, nervous system, organs and muscles, and provides an interactive experience for kids to explore the inner workings of their makeup.

The app is bursting with fun animations, 3-D models, tours and explanations around each section.
